Year Round Fishing Conditions

Year Round Fishing ConditionsFishing is one of few outdoor sports that you can engage in year round. With the exception of winter where you will ice fish, in all three others seasons of the year, you can fish from a boat or side of a stream, river or lake.

The success of your fishing depends on the type of fish biting during that time of year, the temperature of the water and heat of the sun.

We can’t also forget that the time of day plays a large role in successful fishing. Before the sun sets high in the sky, some fish prefer the cooler water, which makes early morning fishing better than midday.

Some fish species like dark and murky water, making an early evening or nighttime fishing a good time.

Here is a breakdown of what you can expect for seasonal fishing.

Remember, though, this is just a guide and not an absolute. Some research ahead of time on the type of fish you’re after is the best solution for a successful fishing excursion.

Spring – this is typically when fish begin spawning. Since water temperatures take a while to hit a decent 65 degrees, many fish species will swim at the surface of the water, where the sun has warmed the top layer or close to shore.

Summer – many fish species have released their offspring by now and due to the rising heat of the water temperature, you’ll find much fish to swim deep below the surface where it is colder and darker.

Fall – water temperatures are much cooler by now, making the fish really active to locate the warm spots in the water. The colder the water, the hungrier the fish are, which makes it easier to catch a fish.

Winter – while the quantity of fish is lower in the winter, the quality of fish is increased. Fishing trips in the winter tend to be shorter days with fewer fish, but the fish you catch will be well fed.

At Burntwood Lake Lodge our unique location boasts over 1000 miles of pristine shoreline to fish from and is scattered with weed beds, hidden reefs and much more; perfect for trophy Walleye and Pike Fishing. Being a Manitoba fly-in only resort we provide a large selection of tackle and bait in our souvenir store. For more information, contact us today!

Tips To Bring Home A Northern Pike This Winter

Tips To Bring Home A Northern Pike This WinterIf you fish for Northern Pike, you will most likely hear anglers discussing the best ways to catch them in the middle of winter.

With so many different tips, it can be hard to tell what will and won’t work.

Regardless of what you decide on, the following tips are a great place to start when you decide to hit the ice.

Reel In That Northern Pike

  • Location, Location, Location – When you head out to catch a northern pike, take note of where their food supply is calling. If you are able to find that, the Pike won’t be too hard too far behind.
  • Play The Game – Northern Pike is known to play with anglers bait. If you feel it a tug, don’t reel your line all the way in. Instead, reel in slowly as the Pike may return and bite again. Do this and stay patient and you could just end up with a catch.
  • Get The Right Bait – Don’t even bother with smaller bait when trying to catch a Northern Pike because they won’t either. Make your bait about 6 to 8 inches long. But keep in mind you might have to reel your bait in yourself as most stores don’t carry bait that long.

Burntwood Lake Lodge offers fishing trip packages in Manitoba.

Our fishing guides will take you out on the water and help you bring home your next trophy.

Flying Moose in Northern Manitoba

Hello to all of you moose hunters!  Ever wonder if there’s a more efficient way to transport a bull moose from the kill site to Burntwood Lake Lodge?  Here at BWL we like to make this step as easy as possible by using one of our Robinson 44 helicopters to sling the moose out.  By using this method of transport, makes it a bit easier on our guides and insures that meat wastage is never an issue.

The video you will view is a bull moose being slung from a hunting site approximately 15 miles from the town of Snow Lake, Manitoba onto the local hunters flatbed trailer.    Slinging Moose with Heli 2015

3 Fishing Lure Tips For Catching Northern Pike At Burntwood Lake

3 Fishing Lure Tips For Catching Northern Pike At Burntwood LakeThere are some lessons that take the time to learn, some professions that take more than a lifetime to master, but we are here to give you some tips that some are helpful and easy to learn now.

When it comes to catching Northern Pike, there are a few things that are worth knowing.

This is especially true when you want to have a fruitful Northern Pike fishing trip.

Here is a list of three lure techniques to know:

  1. The bigger the lure doesn’t mean a bigger fish. Just because there are a lot of people that believe the old adage “bigger is better”, this is not always true. When fishing for Northern Pike there is much more than just size of the lure that should be kept in mind when trying to Pike. This leads us to our next tip.
  2. The color of the dress doesn’t matter if it can’t dance. While there are people that will say that the color is most important, the Northern Pike care more about the movement of the lure than anything else. Jointed streamers and flies with wide, cone-shaped bucktail heads produced the best, because when paused, they would flutter or jackknife, allowing the material to pulsate.
  3. Topwater lures aren’t the best for Pikes. Topwater lures under a range of conditions are great but to be truthful, using topwater isn’t always going to produce that trophy fish you want. When it comes to working the surface, it shouldn’t be the first and only try.

These three tips are just the beginning. Plan your next fishing trip at Burntwood Lake Lodge and we guarantee an amazing experience filled with heaps of trophy fish on your fishing pole.

2015 Moose Hunt

20151008_185059_resizedHunting was a bit slow, we can blame it on the unusually wet and windy weather but the fact is the bulls just didn’t want to come out and play. The guests could hear the bulls back in the bush, as well the cows calling them back.

Guide Johnny with guest Jeff on his first moose hunt got his bull on the last day of the first week. The night before Jeff got his moose, he was a little down and ready to sell his custom made rifle.  After getting his bull I asked how much he wanted and suddenly the rifle wasn’t for sale. Nice moose Jeff. Great job Johnny.

The second week Guide (last day) Leo and guest Brent got his bull on the last day of the week at the last minute. Leo has been guiding Brent for 2 years previous and true to his name, got Brent his bull on the last day in those 2 years as well.  Nice bull and see you next year Brent. Great job Leo.

The third week, Guide Joe (the legend) showed everyone how it should be done.  Joe with guests John and John went out one morning and Joe did a couple calls and 2 bulls came out grunting from different directions.  Within minutes we had 2 very happy hunters. Nice bulls John and John. Excellent job Joe.

The third week Guide Gentleman Joe and guest Cassie tried to find a bear without any luck. The bears were either keeping close to their dens or still fattening up on berries and wouldn’t come to the baits.  I watched as Joe would land the boat, get out and take Cassie’s gun and then put his hand out to help her out of the boat.  Joe is a bit of a rugged looking guy and after witnessing how he helped Cassie I gave him the name Gentleman Joe.  Hope to see you in the Spring Cassie when the bears are a lot more active.

Find The Best Time For Fishing

Find The Best Time For FishingIt’s fishing season, the season you’ve been waiting for, you’re positive that this is going to be your year. You can just feel it and you’ve seen your trophy fish in your dreams. You have everything you need; rods, reels, line, lures, bait, sinkers and a boat with a full tank of gas.

But just because you have everything you need doesn’t mean you’re going to catch that fish, the fish don’t bite simply because you’re out on the water and you dangle flashy smelly things in front of them.

There are plenty of tips you should know about when to fish.

Seasons

Experts say that the best time to fish in the spring is early morning or “morning rise”, fish will be hungry after the long winter and need to feed to prepare for spawning. In the summer, fish will avoid the long hot summer days and lay low so the best time to fish is at night. In the fall fish will be in a feeding frenzy getting ready for a long winter.

Weather

Fish are most active when the water is between 55 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the water should feel cool to your skin but not freezing. The wind plays a part as well, you want the water to be calm and still or even a bit rippled.

Tide

Know your moons. Your best bet will be between one hour before and one hour after high tides and one hour before and one hour after low tides.

Burntwood Lake Lodge provides multiple Fishing Packages to choose from here in Manitoba, Canada. With over 1,000 miles of shoreline and out professional guides we can assist you with your dream catch. Contact us today to book your next trip.

Why “Catch & Release” Is The Solid Fishing Practice

We all know how exciting it is, sitting on your boat or dock, patiently waiting for the tug on your line. Then it happens and after the excitement dies down, it’s time to throw the long awaited fish back into the water. While it isn’t as exciting as keeping your prize, it is what’s best for the fishing habitat.

The fishing industry is very large and there are so many who enjoy the sport, that if we didn’t exercise a catch and release policy, fishing would not be as enjoyable and not nearly as exciting.

Most restrictions allow the fisherman to make the choice to keep or release and while some keep the fish for dinner, most are in it for sport. However, if you are following the rules, which are generally on size or the number of fish, you won’t be doing any damage to that area’s fish population.

So, what’s the proper technique for landing a fish? Why “Catch & Release” Is The Solid Fishing Practice

Start with using the proper tackle and line. The stronger the line, the faster you will get the fish to your boat or on land, which means less stress on the fish which increases the fish’s chances of survival.

You can use live bait or lures; however lures typically have a higher survival rate because the fish don’t swallow them like they do with live bait. Don’t remove the fish from water for more than four minutes and wet your hands before handling the fish to avoid removing its outer mucous membrane that protects its skin.

When it’s time to put the fish back in the water, do it so their head goes in first.

Here at Burntwood Lake Lodge, we have practiced a catch and release policy of all Northern Pike over 30” for 15 years and by doing this, we offer an excellent fishing opportunity. If you are interested in booking your next fishing trip with us, please contact us today.
